Android 17 Beta 1 is Here: What Developers Need to Know

The next chapter of Android has arrived earlier than usual! Google has officially released the first Beta of Android 17, and it brings some significant changes to the development cycle and platform requirements.

If you’re a developer or a tech enthusiast, here is a breakdown of what’s new and how to get your apps ready for the Q2 2026 release.

A New Release Cycle

In a departure from previous years, Android 17 has moved straight into the Beta phase, skipping the traditional "Developer Preview" period. This shift is designed to give developers more time to test on stable builds, with the final release targeted for Q2 2026.

Key Features and Developer Updates

1. Mandatory Adaptive Layouts

The biggest change for UI/UX is the removal of the opt-out for orientation and resizability restrictions on large screens (width > 600dp). If your app targets API 37, it must be ready to handle:

  • Folding and unfolding transitions.

  • Multi-window multitasking.

  • Desktop windowing environments.

2. Performance & Smoothness

Android 17 introduces core improvements to the Android Runtime (ART):

  • Generational Garbage Collection: Reduces resource-intensive "stop-the-world" events, leading to better battery life and fewer stutters.

  • Lock-free MessageQueue: A new implementation for apps targeting SDK 37 that aims to eliminate missed frames and improve overall UI responsiveness.

3. Security & Privacy Hardening

  • Cleartext Traffic Deprecation: The android:usesCleartextTraffic attribute is being deprecated. Developers are encouraged to migrate to Network Security Configurations to ensure secure data transmission.

  • Background Audio Restrictions: To prevent "surprising" audio, background audio playback and focus requests now require explicit user initiation.

4. New Media & Connectivity Standards

  • VVC (Versatile Video Coding) Support: Native support for the next-generation video codec.

  • Wi-Fi Ranging: Enhanced proximity detection for more accurate peer-to-peer discovery and secure "tap-to-interact" experiences.

Timeline to Final Release

  • February 2026: Beta 1 (Current)

  • March 2026: Platform Stability (Final SDK/NDK APIs)

  • Q2 2026: Official Final Release

How to Get Started

You can start testing today by enrolling a supported Pixel device in the Android Beta Program or by using the Android 17 system images in the Android Studio Emulator.
